ISO 17025: Transition With Confidence

Get on top of ISO 17025 changes with O’Dwyer Accreditation

Updating your quality manual and procedures to meet the new ISO/IEC 17025:2017 can be a difficult task for a lot of reasons:

  • “We don’t have time to work through the NATA transition document and understand how it applies to us.”
  • “The changes seem vague – how do we know if what we do will be good enough?”
  • “We’re unsure what we are allowed to change in our manuals.”
  • “The manual is structured by the clauses of the old ISO 17025 or ISO 9001: how do we work out where to put in a new requirement?”
  • “I wrote the manual originally and I can’t see what needs to change.”

It can be tempting to just add some more words to the quality manual and hope that this satisfies NATA. If you’ve done this previously, you might now have a manual with too many motherhood statements. Wouldn’t it be great to get the benefits of the new requirements and only make the changes you really need to make? You could have a manual that your staff can understand and implement, rather than a document purely designed to meet theoretical requirements. (See here for a breakdown of the significant changes to the standard and the reasons behind them).

Not all lab and quality managers have the same skill-sets or time available to deal with the new standard. So we’ve created some options for you to get just the right amount of help with the transition.

Our Promise

We will follow up with you after your NATA assessment. We are confident our recommendations will help you meet requirements efficiently and in a way that supports your organisational goals. In the rare case changes we suggest to your quality manual are not accepted, we would advise on how to address the issues raised for no extra charge.

How it works

Option 1 - Clarity

This option is a review of your quality system against the NATA ISO 17025 transition table. It is suited to the lab manager who has the time and inclination to update the manual themselves.

What we do:

  • Identify where you meet the requirements and where there are gaps with a one-hour phone meeting to discuss the changes.
  • Advise on practical ways to address the new requirements without changing too much in your current system.

What you get:

  • A completed NATA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Transition table that you can send to NATA and keep as a reference to demonstrate how you meet the new requirements.
  • A report on further opportunities to simplify or improve the quality system.
  • Confidence that you know what you need to do to meet the new standard.

This option is suited to the lab manager who has the time and inclination to update the manual themselves.

Option 2 - Peace of mind

This option is a more detailed review of your quality management system against the complete ISO 17025:2017. It is suited to small to medium businesses with a quality manual and procedures that may be out-of-date or overly complicated, and who are too busy to update the documents themselves.

What we do:

  • Identify where your quality management system meets the requirements and where there are gaps with a meeting to discuss the changes.
  • Advise on practical ways to address the new requirements without changing too much in your current system.
  • Edit your quality manual and procedures to meet the new requirements.
  • Report on further opportunities to simplify or improve the manual.
  • Includes one on-site visit (or screen-share and phone meetings if distance is an issue).

What you get:

  • A full gap analysis document against the ISO 17025 standard with suggestions to streamline or otherwise improve the content.
  • A completed NATA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Transition table that you can send to NATA and keep as a reference to demonstrate how you meet the new requirements.
  • A draft of your quality manual, etc with changes ready for you to accept.
  • Peace of mind that your quality system meets the new standard.

Option 3 - Confidence for the future

This option is a complete rewrite of the quality manual and main procedures manuals to ensure your organisation has adopted the process approach the new standard is aimed at.

What we do:

  • Conduct detailed gap analysis against the ISO 17025 standard.
  • Conduct an on-site internal audit over at least two days, overviewing the whole laboratory operation versus ISO 17025:2017.
  • Draft changes to the quality manual and procedures to bring them up to date with your current processes and the new ISO17025.

What you get:

  • A quality management system, written around your business processes, that supports your business goals.
  • Manuals you can use to induct and train new staff members.
  • Compliance with ISO 17025:2017.
  • A completed NATA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Transition table that you can send to NATA and keep as a reference to demonstrate how you meet the new requirements.

This option is for the lab that knows there are a lot of things in their quality manual that are not relevant or up-to-date, and wants a system that supports their operation, rather than purely meeting NATA requirements.
